Sedan Honda Civic 4D: there is comfort and space, but is there a spirit of Honda?


We begin to get acquainted with the Honda brand on the example of a new sedan Civic 4D. Not the brightest model for dating, but the most important – for representatives of Honda, and for consumers. Because the new Honda Civic sedan "plays" in one of the most popular classes of cars: it is for such models that hundreds and thousands of Ukrainians give their money. Should I give it to the Honda Civic 4D? Now we'll figure it out.

Positioning

We're talking Honda – mean Civic. The first generation of Civic debuted in the summer of 1972 (as 1973 MG): i.e. the history of Honda Civic counts for almost half a century! Critical-important was 1975: then in the United States introduced new environmental regulations and Honda Civic with a motor CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion) managed to fulfill them without a catalyst – which meant a significant benefit in the price for the final buyer. Thus, the success of the first Honda Civic was brought not by the sport version, but by efficiency and reliability "for every day."

The sedan in the model range Honda Civic did not appear immediately. In the first generation, it was admitted only from the autumn of 1977 until the summer of 1978, and in the second generation also appeared later as a hatchback. Sometimes the sedan was sold under a different name. However, from the third generation of the model (1983) the sedan was constantly present in the family Civic and entered the market almost simultaneously with the hatch. Today the tenth generation Honda Civic is being manufactured and here the sedan appeared even earlier than the hatchback: the first public debut took place in the USA in the fall of 2015; the hatchback appeared in autumn 2016; in the beginning of 2017 the new models Honda Civic came to Europe; and in the middle of 2017 – reached and Ukraine.

In the article the sedan Honda Civic 4D with the petrol motor of 1,6 l capacity of 123 hp is presented. and automatic transmission CVT-variator, in a complete set Elegance – sedans are delivered to Ukraine only in one above described version. For all European markets (including Ukraine) Honda Civic sedan is produced in Turkey. Plus we have hatchbacks Honda Civic – they come with different motors and in different trim levels; but this is in a separate article.

How does it go?

In general – easy and quite comfortable. Suspension swallows many irregularities of medium and large size, can perfectly "smooth" the road. At the same time, there is no build-up or excessive stiffness of the rear part when passing the standing policemen – thanks to the large wheelbase. A couple of comments concern only hard "pokes" when driving pits with sharp edges and comfort on small irregularities. But I'm not sure that these comments can be attributed to the suspension, because the car got to me on winter tires, and on the street it was already stable + 15-20 degrees of heat. As a result, the tires were pumped up to 2.5-2.7 atmosphere in order to make them slightly more "assembled". Similarly, with controllability. With the initial deviation of the rudder by 10-15 degrees there is a feeling that the car is a fraction of a second behind the reaction, there is a feeling of understeer. But as soon as this moment passes, as soon as the steering wheel is turned to a larger angle – everything is fine: neutral behavior, ease in turning; "Steering wheel" gives an understanding of the angle of the bend. The steering wheel is pleasantly sharp – less than 2.5 turns from the stop to the stop – but it's quite easy: it's not a sport steering wheel, it does not tire your hands; but at the same time, it provides fairly quick, quick car reactions. Now tell me: initial comments – this is to "plump" winter tires or to the suspension and steering in general? I have a persistent impression that to the first point: if the street was cold or the car was traveling on summer tires, a number of these small reservations would not have been here.

The motor fits well into this picture: quiet in work and excellent-tyagovity from 1-1,5 thousand to 4 thousand rpm – just the working range in a real ride around the city and the highway. But further "twist" its meaning is not, because there is no noticeable increase in dynamics. But there is noise that disturbs in general a good acoustic comfort: quietly on the motor (to medium revs), quietly in the aerodynamics, only a little the noise from the wheel arches appears.

Exterior Honda Civic 4 [19659006] D looks older and more solid than its class: a length of almost 4.7 m and a base of 2.7 m were recently featured in the sedan D -class. Attention is drawn to many details: chrome roof vault, unusual rims; and a complex layered front and does "look like a million." Look into the headlights: the lens, the LED strip, the chrome eyebrow – oh, how much! But do not rush to conclusions: the headlights are an ordinary halogen, there are no lights for turns. In the back part, attention is attracted by narrow stylish lamps with LED dimensions, but there was also a place for simple light bulbs. Low body and the roofline set a dynamic silhouette! But if you are afraid to cut off the bumper – it's in vain: despite the modest passport clearance (135 mm), the front bumper passes over the brow; they only rest on the elastic fairings of the front wheels. The first intermediate conclusion: the sedan Honda Civic 4 D can look more expensive than it actually is …

… and here is the second intermediate conclusion: despite on the formidable appearance, in the sensations of driving Honda Civic 4 D clear and simple, it has a light steering wheel and comfortable suspension, plus silence in driving. Let there be no reservations without reservations, but the general character is already understandable and it is important that this character is integral. The engine (123 hp and 152 Nm) does not explode VTEC -power at high rpm, but good at the bottoms and in the middle; he is helped by CVT -variator with different modes : D ; S ; L . The ECON mode does not turn the car into a "vegetable", but also does not provide a noticeable reduction in consumption – so, the difference is at the level of details and nuances.

Many motorists do not like variators for "smeared" reactions and inability to change turns with dynamic acceleration: the engine always buzzes at the same time, which smears the impression of overclocking. But it was about 10-15 years ago and those companies who stayed with the variators were already quite able to adjust them. Variator Honda Civic 4D may not be the best example, but overall good: here the minimum delay in reactions to pressing the gas pedal during normal driving, a smooth change in the gear ratio, a soft start from the site. Plus there are two additional modes: S – sports; L – downshifts. In sports mode, the variator changes the gear ratio a little (as if lowering one gear in the "mechanic") and if only the engine worked at 1,5-2 thousand rpm, then in the S mode, the tachometer's arrow rises to three thousand. As a result, the engine is near the maximum moment zone, which gives the impression of a sharper, sporty response to the accelerator pedal pressing. Although it does not affect the overclocking: all the same, 123 "horses" are 123 and no more. Mode L is useful when you need to drive through the snow or a primer, providing greater traction on the wheels and not allowing the variator to "fail" the motor to a low speed. Only with dynamic accelerations in the "gas-to-floor" mode, the variator does not hurry to simulate the transmissions and change the speed of the motor, keeping the tachometer pointer about 5-6 thousand rpm. Although, as noted above, there is little sense in this – there is no noticeable improvement in the overclocking dynamics. Most owners will go in the "home-work-school" mode and "twist" the engine in the mode of 1,5-4 thousand rpm – and there is good both the engine and the CVT-variator.

In a word, do not try to find sports car in the sedan Honda Civic 4D, consider this car as a spacious family sedan – and everything will be fine. The front panel pleases with the design, the seats are comfortable, and the instruments are quite a sight. There is an original armrest: a movable central part, the possibility of opening; cupholders inside; a large useful volume. Other pleasant trivia: a hidden shelf with plugs / sockets hidden behind the center console; illumination and AUTO-mode of all buttons of window regulators on the driver's door (although the pockets on the doors are not very large). When landing back a little embarrassed clamped doorways – after all, a dynamic silhouette and sloping roof. But the rear seats are good: comfortable profiled sofa; sufficient headroom and a huge margin for the legs; there is an armrest and coasters. Perhaps, it would be desirable to have deflectors for ventilation or heated seats – but these are wishes from the category of "excesses". But the wishes from the "must-have" category concern the trunk: there are no additional shelves / niches, there is no inner handle for closing.

The front part of the salon is pleased with the unusual design; while originality goes alongside convenience. An unusual armrest with fabric trim is spacious and with two cupholders inside. The devices are beautiful and original, while the information is read quickly. By the way, take a closer look: here is a conventional digital display, an economizer bar (glows green or white), a conventional tachometer, and temperature indicators for antifreeze and fuel level are the usual scales behind the glass. Simple solutions – but how cool it all turned out in general! Once again: a car can look more expensive than its price. The seats are set low, the landing is deep, the weight distribution is good.

The landing back is complicated by the trapped doorway; but then the interior pleases with space, especially – the stock of legroom; there is an armrest, coasters, pockets in the door. And in general – praiseworthy attention to detail: AUTO-mode for power windows, a convenient climate unit, a secret niche behind the center console, a full-fledged hatch with a curtain. The luggage compartment is good in volume (519 l), but this is where its pluses end: the loading opening is small, there is no handle on the inside of the lid, nor are there niches for small items.

Is there innovation?

Despite its original appearance and unusual interior, the Honda Civic 4D sedan is built according to traditional recipes, proven solutions were used here. Bearing body – with a high content of high-strength steels: the manufacturer states that the share of ultra-high-strength steel increased from 1% in the predecessor to 12% in the current model; this allowed to improve safety and, at the same time, to facilitate (-31 kg) the body of the car. Front suspension – the traditional McPherson; rear – multi-link, independent. The steering is built according to the "gear-rake" scheme, plus the electric power steering.

The body is completely new; here increased the share of heavy-duty steels, which allowed to increase its strength and slightly facilitate the car. Suspension in the front and back – independent. The traditional atmospheric engine with a compression ratio of 10.7: 1 is designed for the use of conventional 95-th gasoline; In a pair with him works CVT -variator. A similar campaign, yes multiplied by quiet traditional buyers (and there will be a majority) promise reliability and durability of operation.

However, there is one unique development that can not be left aside: the i-VTEC system: it controls the phases of the gas distribution, which helps improve the purging of the combustion chamber and the mixing of the air-fuel mixture – and this allows to increase power and reduce fuel consumption. How everything works: the engine has a camshaft with several cams of different sizes and profiles that control the opening / closing of the valves. A multi-section rocker (rocker) is also provided between the camshaft and the valve. Depending on which cam is currently active (ie the rocker is locked or not) – the valve timing and the valve lift are changing. A similar VTEC system has been encountered on Honda cars for a long time, and the addition of the letter "i" only means that now i-VTEC technology has become more "intelligent" and "flexible" in the decision-making process. Also note that the engine series R16 on the sedan Honda Civic 4D has a chain drive timing and SOHC scheme, i.e. one camshaft. In this motor, the i-VTEC system is configured so (there is a separate small cam) that, at low loads, Miller's cycle is realized and this allows to reduce fuel consumption. At the same time, the Miller cycle usually means a reduction in power at higher rpm, but here the i-VTEC system has other (enlarged) cams, which makes it possible to provide a good torque and power in the midrange.

Plus, I would like to mention the rear view camera. In fact, the presence of a rear-view camera for a sedan of this class and price is nothing special: the picture is good and there are prompt lines; plus parking sensors work together with the camera. But what did you like? The rear view camera offers three viewing options: standard, widescreen, zoom mode (ZOOM): it's really convenient and easy to implement – why do so only one ?! Switching the review modes is performed by pressing the button near the central LCD. In passing, a couple of words about the display itself: it's not touch-sensitive, it only has a diagonal of five inches, and the graphics are simple. Functionality is sufficient, but not more than that: radio, audio system, telephone connection for conversations, various settings. Sorry, but there is no navigation, there is not enough integration with smartphones, such as Apple CarPlay or Android Auto technologies. In general, all this is; but in more advanced multimedia systems that only got Honda Civic hatchback, I'll tell you in a separate article.

The rear view camera is an example of how Honda was "confused" for real convenience of the person and "did not get bogged down "The vast majority of other car manufacturers. The rest of the 5-inch central LCD display is familiar: an audio system; connection of the phone via the Bluetooth ; different settings.

Prices and competitors

As already mentioned above, with the Honda Civic 4D everything is simple – the car is available in one version: a 1.6-liter petrol motor; "Automatic" CVT-variator; grade Elegance. Which, however, is good: climate control; heated seats; ESP (VSA) and six airbags; Cruise control; audio system with the ability to connect the phone and a 5-inch display; 16-inch alloy wheels; multifunction steering wheel with buttons. Plus pleasant "compliments from the boss": a rear-view camera and a glass sunroof. The price is also the same – the equivalent of $ 21,900 or about 570 thousand UAH. This is a special price for cars in 2017. (the standard price is higher by $ 1,000); but the fact is, there is such a price right now.

Now, briefly about the competitors. Firstly, they are similar S-class sedans. For example, Mazda 3: offers a more extensive selection of different trim levels and clockwork, but can not bring comfort and quietness to the ride, and the trunk is smaller. Another example – Renault Megane Sedan: comfortably rides, gives a wide choice of modifications, there are many interesting equipment, but the interior does not shine with space. Note also other popular models: Hyundai Elentra, Toyota Corolla, outgoing Ford Focus. Also, you can not leave adjacent competitors behind. First of all, Skoda Octavia: let and liftbek, and not a sedan, but otherwise a strong competitor – a spacious salon, a wide choice of versions, a well-known name. However, for the price of the Honda Civic 4D, only Octavia 1.6 will be available in the initial mid-range configuration, where you can only dream of a sunroof, rear view camera, and a TSI motor. Another example is the B-class overgrowners, like the Hyundai Accent and the Citroen C-Elysee: the first is pleased with the equipment, but it lacks a spacious interior; the second offers space, but it grieves the elaboration of details. And in general – both models are not bad, but their top-versions for 500-600 thousand UAH. do not hold out to the impression of a more classy and expensive car, which gives the sedan Honda Civic.

There are a lot of competitors, each offers something special. But the sedan Honda Civic is also difficult: original design; unusual, but comfortable salon; good equipment. Also, the name Honda which is still highly quoted in Ukraine.

The cost of maintenance

The city's fuel consumption averaged about 9.5 liters per 100 km; in traffic jams and with dynamic driving, the consumption increased to 10-11 liters; at weekends and at empty roads – fell to 7.5-8 liters per 100 km of track. On the highway at a speed of 80-90 km / h, fuel consumption was 4.5-5 liters per 100 km; at a speed of 110-120 km / h – increased to about 6 liters per 100 kilometers.

The standard warranty for a car is three years or 100 thousand kilometers – whichever comes first. Periodicity of maintenance – once in 15 thousand km or once a year. The cost of the minimum maintenance is 2.3 thousand UAH; Extended maintenance will cost 3.5-5.2 thousand UAH.

When you get acquainted with cars in the style of "midsize class, the optimal version", you can get a situation like with Mitsubishi ASX or Hyundai Creta – like everything is fine, but somehow "does not cling." Or maybe the situation when the car is like and familiar, but finds the strength and ability to surprise – for example, the Hyundai Accent or Nissan Qashqai. Where is Honda Civic 4D? Believe it or not, but in the second group. С кучей мелких оговорок, невозможностью выбора мотора или коробки, с замечаниями к багажнику – но это хороший автомобиль для «реальной жизни»: вспомните, с чего начиналась история успеха Honda Civic – не со спортивных заряженных версий, а с экономичности и надежности.

Honda Civic 4D прибыл в Украину с твердым намерением дать бой лидерам рынка. И все ключевые качества для этого у него есть: хорошо выглядит, предлагает адекватную цену, просторен внутри, радует комплектацией. Пусть это не откровение в классе, но однозначно новый сильный игрок, на которого нужно обратить внимание.
